Kalichaat: A Brilliant Debut Direction Applauded on National and International Level












The original meaning of Kalichaat is a hard black rock that cannot be broken by the efforts of an individual. It is believed to be a curse for the farmers as if it comes in between, there may or may not be huge amount of water beneath. The title of the Film Kalichaat has been taken from the novel sharing the same title. Kalichaat revolves around the woes and troubles of Indian farmers suffering from severe water crisis problem. Water crisis is a predominant issue, especially in Malwa region, where a poor farmer hits his mattock for the whole day but can hardly feed his family well.

An amazing debut direction by Sudhanshu Sharma, Kalichaat was made with the sole motive to address the cries of Indian farmer community in a more coherent manner. A well-chosen cast and crew of the film, who belongs to the same region, bring the whole story to life. The protagonist of the Film, Sitaram, a poor farmer, and one day decides to dig a well with a hope of getting ample amount of water. All of a sudden, his mattock hits a hard black rock, Kalichaat! Lack of knowledge, money and resources gets him trapped in a vicious circle of loan sharks, religious Gurus and unending tyranny.

The complete film has been conceptualized so brilliantly that it will automatically get immersed in its story. This reality element had made Kalichaat so popular on national as well as international level. The film was released in June 2016 and so far, it has won 12 prestigious awards and official recognition in 23 film festivals worldwide. Such a warm response in early days of Kalichaat is a testimony of same human emotions across national boundaries.

Kali chaat has won many accolades for its story, direction, acting and many more. Few of them include Best Film at Kalyan International Film Festival, Best Story, Best Film, Best Director and Audience Choice award at Free Spirit Film Festival, Best Director award at Haryana International Film Festival and many more. The film has also been scrutinized by the prolific writers and philosophers like Jaiprakash Chowksey and Vishnu Khare with media coverage in local and foreign newspapers.

Kalichaat : A Feature Film Throwing Light on the Struggles of Indian Farmers












Water is a bare necessity of life. Access to this natural resource is a human right for each human being. But, unfortunately, farmers are thrown out of this league. An Indian farmer, who works harder day and night for a 2-time meal, remains deprived of his very basic rights! This is the real scenario of India which was once known as golden bird. This golden bird is no more called by this name now because there are millions of people who are still continually fighting to win the race of survival.

Water crisis problem is there in its full form in our country and eradication of this problem is far more important than making digital India. In Madhya Pradesh, water crisis problem is still dominant. In spite of availability of sufficient resources, the poor farmers who always remain under the clichés of bureaucracy and illiteracy continue to suffer.

Born and brought up in Nimar-Malwa region, a profound thinker, writer and philosopher Sudhanshu Sharma decided to weave these problems in his debut film ‘Kalichaat’. Kalichaat is an adapted title of a novel sharing the same title; written by Dr. Sunil Chaturvedi. The film is based on the woes and troubles of Indian farmers due to water crisis.

The lead of the film, Sitaram owns a land passed on by his father. Struggling from severe water crisis, one day, he decides to dig well in the hope of getting ample amount of water. He begins hitting the mattock and suddenly, a huge black rock (Kalichaat) comes in contact with it. All his hopes turn into despair. He then decides to approach local authorities for digging a tube well but they deny saying that documents are required to fulfill his request. Somehow, he collects everything but in vain; he gradually gets trapped in the vicious circle of loan sharks, religious gurus and bureaucrats that reap nothing but desperation.
Kalichaat is a realistic creation by Sudhanshu and dramatized by the people living in the Malwa region. Each situation in the film has been portrayed so originally that you will automatically get immersed. The film has received many prestigious laurels on national and international levels such as best film, best screenplay and audience choice award in Free Spirit Film Festival, Best Director award in Haryana International Film Festival, etc. Kalichaat has been screened in various honorable festivals organized by the government agencies as well as private teams.

The film was officially released in June 2016 but its success is overwhelming. In its early days, the film has received immense appreciation from all over the world which predicts its sparkling success in longer term!
