Kalichaat : A Feature Film Throwing Light on the Struggles of Indian Farmers

Water is a bare necessity of life. Access to this natural resource is a human right for each human being. But, unfortunately, farmers are thrown out of this league. An Indian farmer, who works harder day and night for a 2-time meal, remains deprived of his very basic rights! This is the real scenario of India which was once known as golden bird. This golden bird is no more called by this name now because there are millions of people who are still continually fighting to win the race of survival.

Water crisis problem is there in its full form in our country and eradication of this problem is far more important than making digital India. In Madhya Pradesh, water crisis problem is still dominant. In spite of availability of sufficient resources, the poor farmers who always remain under the clichés of bureaucracy and illiteracy continue to suffer.

Born and brought up in Nimar-Malwa region, a profound thinker, writer and philosopher Sudhanshu Sharma decided to weave these problems in his debut film ‘Kalichaat’. Kalichaat is an adapted title of a novel sharing the same title; written by Dr. Sunil Chaturvedi. The film is based on the woes and troubles of Indian farmers due to water crisis.

The lead of the film, Sitaram owns a land passed on by his father. Struggling from severe water crisis, one day, he decides to dig well in the hope of getting ample amount of water. He begins hitting the mattock and suddenly, a huge black rock (Kalichaat) comes in contact with it. All his hopes turn into despair. He then decides to approach local authorities for digging a tube well but they deny saying that documents are required to fulfill his request. Somehow, he collects everything but in vain; he gradually gets trapped in the vicious circle of loan sharks, religious gurus and bureaucrats that reap nothing but desperation.
Kalichaat is a realistic creation by Sudhanshu and dramatized by the people living in the Malwa region. Each situation in the film has been portrayed so originally that you will automatically get immersed. The film has received many prestigious laurels on national and international levels such as best film, best screenplay and audience choice award in Free Spirit Film Festival, Best Director award in Haryana International Film Festival, etc. Kalichaat has been screened in various honorable festivals organized by the government agencies as well as private teams.

The film was officially released in June 2016 but its success is overwhelming. In its early days, the film has received immense appreciation from all over the world which predicts its sparkling success in longer term!
