The original meaning of Kalichaat is a hard black rock that cannot be broken by the efforts of an individual. It is believed to be a curse for the farmers as if it comes in between, there may or may not be huge amount of water beneath. The title of the Film Kalichaat has been taken from the novel sharing the same title. Kalichaat revolves around the woes and troubles of Indian farmers suffering from severe water crisis problem. Water crisis is a predominant issue, especially in Malwa region, where a poor farmer hits his mattock for the whole day but can hardly feed his family well.
An amazing debut direction by Sudhanshu Sharma, Kalichaat was made with the sole motive to address the cries of Indian farmer community in a more coherent manner. A well-chosen cast and crew of the film, who belongs to the same region, bring the whole story to life. The protagonist of the Film, Sitaram, a poor farmer, and one day decides to dig a well with a hope of getting ample amount of water. All of a sudden, his mattock hits a hard black rock, Kalichaat! Lack of knowledge, money and resources gets him trapped in a vicious circle of loan sharks, religious Gurus and unending tyranny.
The complete film has been conceptualized so brilliantly that it will automatically get immersed in its story. This reality element had made Kalichaat so popular on national as well as international level. The film was released in June 2016 and so far, it has won 12 prestigious awards and official recognition in 23 film festivals worldwide. Such a warm response in early days of Kalichaat is a testimony of same human emotions across national boundaries.
