Kalichaat: A Movie that Conspires ‘Underprivileged’ Emotions at its Best

Masterpieces are always meant to outshine. A movie is a unified whole of tiny pieces of facts, emotions, reality and imagination that render different effects on viewers. Setting on a debut work for social enlightenment and fulfilling it with sheer dedication isn’t easy for all. However, a great writer, philosopher and director from Indore, Madhya PradeshSudhanshu Sharma’ have redefined the meaning of debut films.

Sudhanshu’s debut piece ‘Kalichaat’ is touching million national and international souls. Based on a bitter reality of Indian farmer community, the film urges to wake up and do something for those surviving in adverse conditions. A farmer, who sweats day and night with his plough to feed us with the best food, always remains under the clichés of bureaucracy.

Based on a novel sharing the same title, Kalichaat was shot with the primary motive of awakening our politicians, our society and our nation so that they practice what they preach. The cast and crew of the film have been chosen from the local region itself to portray the deep-rooted national issue more keenly. Kalichaat was made with a very low budget as well as on the real location where farmers face these kinds of issues every now and then.

The film has received global recognition in its very early days of completion. Few festivals even showered an array of accolades which added flickers to the success of the film. Free Spirit Film Festival, Mcloedgunj awarded Kalichaat for ‘Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Audience Award’, Kalyan Film Festival rewarded with ‘Best Film and Best Story’, Wine Country chose the film in their semi-finals category and many more.

Overall, Kalichaat will captivate your attention to the extent that you will be flooded with questions on what should actually be done for the welfare of Indian farmers. A farmer who struggles day and night in the quest of a better is deprived even for a day’s meal is a big blot on our society and bureaucrats who don’t want to come out of their comfort zone.

Kalichaat : An Award-Winning Depiction of Indian Farmers’ Scenario

‘Rich getting richer and poor getting poorer’ is unfortunately the bitter truth of Indian economy. The poor farmers continually strive in the quest for a better life. The saddest part is: the one who struggle day and night to feed us with proper food is deprived of the very basic necessities of life; food, water and clothes. This deep-rooted problem across the whole Malwa region led an eminent director and producer, Mr. Sudhanshu Sharma, to portray the same in his film ‘Kalichaat’. Kalichaat is nothing but an indestructible, hard black rock that cannot be broken by hitting the mattock. The chief character of Kalichaat, Sitaram, starts digging a well hoping for large amount of water beneath, but unfortunately, Kalichaat – the hard rock comes in between and his hope turns into despair.

The director, Mr. Sudhanshu Sharma has keenly observed the severe misfortunes faced by the Indian farmers. The whole team of Kalichaat has left no stone unturned to portray each situation realistically. The poor farmers get trapped in the vicious circle of poverty. You will be mesmerized to see how a farmer strives whole day for bread and butter. It’s really ironic how an innocent farmer strives hard to feed his family but ultimately gets nothing.

‘Water crisis’ is one of the biggest concerns for the poor farmers in Malwa region. ‘Kalichaat’ is also inspired from an NGO ‘Vibhavari’ working for the water crisis and landless farmers/workers. The genuine efforts of protagonists, wonderful folk tunes and reality-intense portrait by the director led the film to win an array of accolades on national as well as international level!

KALICHAAT : A Globally Acclaimed Tale of Mounting and Sinking Hopes

‘If you ate today, thank a farmer’. Pragmatically, farmers are the lifeline of Indian economy but realistically, they are the most deprived group of our society. Especially, the Nimar-Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh is brimmed with struggles of marginalized farmers, due to water crisis. The urge to address this issue in a more coherent manner led a writer, philosopher and director Sudhanshu Sharma to conceptualize a film. Being a part of an NGO ‘Vibhavari’ added more fuel to depict the prevailing woes and troubles of farmers in his debut creation ‘Kalichaat’. Kalichaat is based on a novel sharing the same title which is written by Dr. Sunil Chaturvedi, an active Partner of Vibhavari (for the welfare of poor and landless workers).

Kalichaat, a hard black rock, is the part of society that needs to be broken so that the poor enjoy equal rights beneath. In the film, Kalichaat is a huge and stiff black rock that comes in between while digging the well and cannot be broken by human efforts. But, once broken, it is believed that there is colossal of water beneath. The direction of Sudhanshu Sharma and the eye of Raut Jaywant Murlidhar have captured each moment so intensely that you will inevitably sink yourselves in it.

Kalichaat revolves around Sitaram, a poor farmer and his family, who tries everything to step out of the bog, instead goes down into it, in fact much deeper. Sitaram starts digging the well and after going few deep, sees Kalichaat and his journey of dismay begins. Lack of funds for breaking Kalichaat through machine and absence of education traps him in an endless circle of banks, religious gurus and misleading neighbors. Ultimately, when every door of his hope closes, he decides to sacrifice his life too.

This is the real situation of innumerable farmers in India, who feed us with the best possible food but sleep with hunger and starvation. Because of its sensitive theme, captivating direction and real location, the film has received immense recognition at national as well as international level. The dialogues in Malwi have been framed by Dr. Sonal Sharma, another active partner of Vibhavari. The sole aim of making the film was to address the problems faced by poor farmers actively and coherently. A breeze of folk music at different phases adds more glare to it.

Kalichat - The Story of Million Farmers | kalichaat.com

The story of million farmers :-

The story revolves around Sitaram, a farmer like many other in central India, with less than limited means. Trying hard to meet ends and provide for his family the basics of life. The problem, repeatedly failing monsoon, the lifeline of Indian farmers, making his land yield nothing but weed despite him doing all he can. His family of 5, including his wife, two sons, and a daughter suffers along.
Sitaram's efforts to quench the thirst of his land leads him try and dig a well in his land. The hard sound of mattock hitting the dreadful black rock – Kalichaat – is nothing but a disaster as cracking Kalichaat and reaching water beneath will require means beyond his approach. But to match adversities with his will, he approaches the local bank specifically established to meet the needs of farmers, only to realize that getting help there is even complex than breaking Kalichaat.
In this state of despair, the showering water coming out of a tubewell drilling at his village makes him wonder why can't he have one at his land. A hope for him, perceived a gamble by many, including his wife. Again the seemingly never ending tryst authorities, loan sharks, and religious gurus, while keeping his family hopeful for a better future, begins. Pledging the very land he wanted water for, tubewell drilling starts. One after another, attempts fail, land shrinks and hopes die. What's left is a question on our conscience as a society and as a system, as to why we let the actual breadwinner die in pursuit of a better life.
